I thought I'd pass this on.  I acquired a (used) Logitech wired Gamepad that acted strange.  I tried to calibrate using the Windows - Control Panel - Printers and Devices applet many times with no luck.  But then I read on-line to do:

1) remove batteries
2) hold buttons 6, 8, and 1 (front right two and "X")
3) reinsert batteries while holding the above 3 buttons
4) confirm that the thumbstick is working properly

Mine is wired so I held the buttons while connecting the USB.  Now it works perfectly.
